Welcome to PEP (Picture Editing Package)!
Version 1.6
PEP is a super-fast drawing and layout program for PC compatible
computers running under DOS. You can use it to create diagrams,
illustrations, drawings of any kind, flow charts, org charts, logos,
labels, presentations, certificates, slide shows, banners, bookmarks,
business cards, forms, fonts, floor plans, and much more.
GETTING STARTED
It takes just three simple steps to get PEP up and running:
Step 1: Make a directory for PEP on your hard disk and copy all of
the PEP files into that directory. (You can also install PEP on a floppy
disk provided that it has at least a 720 kilobyte capacity.)
Step 2: Run PEP's INSTALL utility and answer the questions that it
asks. This will set up PEP to run properly with your hardware
configuration.
Step 3: Run PEP.
If you have a color VGA display, there is a slide show that you can run
which provides a brief introduction to PEP. To view it, after installing
PEP, type "VGASLIDE" at the DOS prompt.
The ASCII file TUTORIAL.DOC contains three simple lessons for beginning
users of PEP. Each project is described keystroke by keystroke, and a full
explanation is provided for every step.
ON-LINE HELP
When you are using PEP, you can access the documentation at any time
through the context-sensitive help facility. For example, to obtain
information about any menu command, just highlight that command with the
cursor and press the F1 key. PEP will take you directly to the relevant
section of the manual. When there are cross references in the manual, you
can click with the mouse or use the GOTO command to view the referenced
section. For complete information on using the help facility, press F1 to
activate Help and then press F1 a second time.
DOCUMENTATION
The complete documentation for PEP is contained in the files having the
extension TXT. CONTENTS.TXT is the table of contents; CHAPT1.TXT contains
chapter one of the manual, and so forth. These are ASCII files and you can
use the DOS COPY command to make a printed version; for example, to print
chapter one type:
COPY CHAPT1.TXT PRN
It is not necessary to print all of the manual, as you can view it while
you are using PEP (see above), but we recommend reading through chapter 1,
which is especially useful when you are using PEP for the first time; it
contains a thorough overview of PEP, and how to use it.
The remainder of the manual is organized as follows. Chapters 2 to 13
describe the menu commands. Chapter 14 covers the function key and ALT-key
commands. (See also the keyboard guide, PEPKEY.PDL, which you can view or
print using PEP). Chapter 15 explains on-line help. Once you have some
experience using PEP, you should consult Chapter 16: Hints, Tricks &
Warnings. If you have any questions about the INSTALL utility, see the
final chapter, CHAPT17.TXT.
YOUR LICENSE TO USE THIS VERSION OF PEP
This is an unregistered shareware copy of PEP. You may use it at no
charge for an evaluation period of up to 90 days. If you want to continue
using PEP after that, you must pay a license fee and obtain a registered
copy as described in the next section below.
You may make and distribute copies of this unregistered shareware version
of PEP, provided that such copies of PEP are complete and unmodified.
Please keep your original copy of PEP, and only distribute duplicates made
from that original. You should NOT distribute a copy made after you have
run the INSTALL utility to set up for your particular hardware
configuration. In no case, may you distribute copies of the registered
version of PEP or of the printed manual.
Additional restrictions apply to commercial distribution (see below).
The PEP software and documentation are provided "as is".

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS
Because of prohibitive processing costs, we ask that international orders
not pay by check (except from a US bank in US dollars) if at all possible.
We suggest:
Credit card payment
American Express money order (in US dollars) or
International postal money order (in US dollars).
Cash payment in your local currency using the current exchange rate is
also acceptable. Use rounding in the conversion; do not send coins.
A COMPATIBLE PRODUCT FROM TRIONUM:
ORCHIS (Org Chart Imaging Software) is a powerful but easy to use tool
for creating org charts, menu trees, decision trees, or diagrams of any
tree-like hierarchy. The intuitive graphical user interface provides easy
access to a wide variety of charting options.
Using the PDL export capability in ORCHIS, you can move org chart images
into PEP. You can use PEP to annotate these charts, adjust layout, add
borders and ornaments, and incorporate other stylistic variations. The
file PEPMENU.PDL included with PEP was created in this way.
ORCHIS supports hardcopy output via LaserJet, DeskJet, PostScript, and
dot matrix printers, and graphical file output in the PCX and EPS formats,
so that charts from ORCHIS can be used in most word processors, publishing
packages, and painting and drawing programs. ORCHIS charts are stored in a
simple ASCII file format, making it easy for programmers to create
compatible utilities.
ORCHIS is distributed as shareware, and an evaluation copy is included
when you register PEP. (A color VGA display is required).
PERMISSION TO COPY FOR COMMERCIAL VENDORS
If you receive money for distributing copies of PEP, offer it as a
promotion for any commercial venture, or use it as an enticement to pay
for any product or service, you are a COMMERCIAL VENDOR.
As a commercial vendor, you have TRIONUM's permission to copy and
distribute the unregistered shareware version of PEP, subject to the
following 3 conditions:
1. The PEP software and documentation that you distribute must be
complete and unmodified.
2. Catalogs and advertisements listing PEP must identify it as
SHAREWARE, which must be adequately defined.
3. You must cease all copying and distributing of PEP immediately
upon notice from TRIONUM.
VENDORS:
The introductory slide show can function as a self running demo of PEP
for computer shows, user group meetings, and the like. First, run INSTALL
(choosing VGA display and light background); then start the slide show by
typing the following at the DOS prompt: PEP /F=VGASLIDE /P=5
